2008 SEASON PREVIEW

The 2008 Bridgton Academy Wolverine lacrosse team began the season on September 29th when they hosted the UMASS Club team at home on Fisher Ellis Field. Fielding nearly 40 players in fall ball, the Wolverines won the contest by an 8-6 margin.  Leading the Wolverines offensive was Bray Dunaway (Tall Timbers, MD) with 3 goals and one assist, and Lanny Ellis (Billerica, MA) who posted two goals.

With the fall season in full swing, the Wolverine Laxmen will play several more contests before the snow arrives in Maine. In November, the BA team will travel to New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York to compete in a variety of showcase events. Two years ago, the Wolverines began participating in fall events in order for the players to highlight their skills at events attended by numerous college coaches. The success of this program is evidenced by the number of players who have been recruited to play in all divisions of the NCAA lacrosse programs around the nation.  As a spring sport, it is necessary for our players to be recognized for their abilities long before the spring season arrives. Getting "looks" from college coaches early in the year has been instrumental in getting 96% of last year's team at a college or university where they will have the opportunity to play lacrosse.

The 2008 season will highlight a team loaded with offensive talent, superb goaltending, and a solid defensive. The players come from 16 different states, with the traditional hotbeds of Maryland, New York, Virginia, and Massachusetts represented, but also the Pacific Northwest, the Mid-West, and the Southwest. With the rapid and popular growth of lacrosse around the nation, more and more players from these areas are seeking out BA for its excellent lacrosse tradition and the academic opportunities it provides.

The 2008 season will again pit the Wolverines against a tough and demanding schedule of opponents. The traditional culprits--Harvard, Wesleyan, Sacred Heart, Hartwick, Fairfield, Bowdoin, West Point, UMASS, and newcomer Hobart--will set the stage for a challenging season. BA will also continue to play several prep opponents, including Holderness, Exeter, Andover, and Hyde.

The BA lacrosse program continues to draw quality players seeking academic improvement, and the opportunity to play lacrosse at the highest collegiate levels. The continued support of alumni who tirelessly promote the academic and athletic benefits of the BA experience are vital to the success of the program. Thank you to all who contribute to the BA lacrosse program and to the "year that makes a difference."  We look forward to seeing you at some of our contests.
